About
Lao Teng means upstairs in Teochew, and the restaurant occupies the second and third floors of 438 Yaowarat Road, entered from the side of the building rather than the ground-floor shopfront, which is why reviewers often walk past it first. It is a modern-looking dim sum room that Wongnai ranked 48th of more than 6,000 Chinese restaurants in Bangkok in its Users' Choice 2025 list. The dishes mentioned most are the black har gow, the salted-egg lava buns and the siu mai; for Peking duck, reviewers advise calling ahead because it sells out some days. Grab adds the black-pepper crab, butter-baked scallops and prawns steamed with fermented black beans, and a Singapore blog rated the deep-fried turnip with minced shrimp the best it had eaten, along with the sweet potato custard buns. On the top level a speakeasy hides behind a bookshelf, which is why a younger crowd comes. Wongnai puts the spend at 500 baht a head and up. Open daily 11:00 to midnight. Google scores it 4.6 from more than 2,700 reviews. MRT Wat Mangkon is two minutes away.
