Old Town Bangkok Restaurants: Where to Eat from Wat Arun and Wat Pho to Banglamphu
Old Town Bangkok restaurants by zone: Wat Arun-view tables in Tha Tien, Jay Fai and Thipsamai on Maha Chai Road, Dinso Road classics, food near Khao San.
Old Town Bangkok restaurants are spread across five neighbourhoods that happen to share one district. Rattanakosin, the island the city was founded on and officially Phra Nakhon district, takes in the riverside lanes of Tha Tien opposite Wat Arun, the old shophouse streets around the Giant Swing, the pad thai corner at Pratu Phi, the Banglamphu grid around Khao San Road, and the flower market at Pak Khlong Talat. They sit close together on a map but eat differently, and this guide treats them that way. It is written for anyone spending a day at Wat Pho or the Grand Palace, for people staying around Khao San, and for residents who come in for one particular plate. Bangkok old town food runs from a 109-baht plate of chicken rice to a one-star Thai tasting menu. Every one of the 14 places below has its dishes and prices sourced from public listings and reviews, and the ranking weighs Google rating and review volume, that dish evidence and editorial judgement.
Budget by the kind of place rather than by the zone. The old shophouses cost little: Thipsamai runs 60 to 200 baht a head, Sae Phun 100 to 250 and Ten Suns 100 to 200. Sit-down Thai and Vietnamese rooms such as Krua Apsorn, Tonkin-Annam and LAUN come to roughly 150 to 600 baht. Group dinners at Mitr Street or Kinlom Chomsaphan land at about 400 to 1,000 baht (Kinlom 500 to 1,000 on Wongnai), Jay Fai at about 800 to 1,500 per Chiang Rai Times, and Nusara’s tasting menu starts at US$185. Two MRT Blue Line stations do most of the work: Sanam Chai exit 1, by Museum Siam, is about six minutes on foot from Tha Tien and Wat Pho, and Sam Yot is ten to twelve minutes from Maha Chai and Dinso roads. Banglamphu has no station, so use the Chao Phraya Express to Phra Athit pier or a taxi. Drivers have two easy options: the Tha Maharaj car park and Kinlom Chomsaphan’s own lot.

Old Town Bangkok restaurants by zone: Tha Tien, Maha Chai, Sao Chingcha, Banglamphu, Pak Khlong Talat
Decide which part of the old town you are in before choosing a restaurant, because walking between zones in the afternoon heat takes longer than the map suggests. Tha Tien is the stretch of Maha Rat Road (often written Maharaj) and its sois between Wat Pho and the river, and it is where the view restaurants are. Rongros, Nusara, Sang Tha Tien, Tonkin-Annam, Mitr Street and the Supanniga room at Riva Arun are all within a few hundred metres of Tha Tien pier. North of it, Tha Chang and Tha Maharaj serve the crowds leaving the Grand Palace.
East of Sanam Luang the old commercial streets begin. Maha Chai Road near Pratu Phi has Jay Fai and Thipsamai a few doors apart, and it is a street for eating and leaving, with no views and nowhere to linger. Sao Chingcha, the Giant Swing beside Bangkok City Hall, anchors Dinso, Tanao and Mahannop roads, where Krua Apsorn, Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu and Sae Phun are short walks from each other. Banglamphu runs north from Democracy Monument to Phra Athit Road and Samsen, with Khao San Road in the middle. Pak Khlong Talat, the flower market at the southern tip near Memorial Bridge, is a market first, and none of the ranked restaurants are there.
Restaurants near Wat Arun, Wat Pho and the Grand Palace
For a Wat Arun view restaurant, the choice comes down to how high you want to sit and how much you want to spend. Wat Arun stands on the Thonburi bank, so the views are from the Tha Tien side looking west: the temple is backlit at sunset and floodlit after dark. Rongros gives the most view for the money, with a terrace and rooftop over the river and a booking line (+66 96 946 1785) worth calling for an evening table. Supanniga Eating Room sits lower, at river level in front of the Riva Arun hotel, and Time Out describes its tables as directly facing the temple. For restaurants near Wat Pho rather than Wat Arun, Mitr Street looks the other way, over Wat Pho from its upper floors, and Nusara begins dinner with welcome bites on a rooftop facing Wat Pho before moving down to an olive-green dining room.
Two of the Tha Tien tables have no view at all. Tonkin-Annam has been cooking Vietnamese food on Soi Tha Tien since at least Time Out’s 2017 review and makes the easiest lunch after Wat Pho, with nem nuong rolled at the table and Hanoi egg coffee. Sang Tha Tien suits a planned dinner for four better than a walk-in; Time Out Thailand called it the hardest Michelin table to book in Tha Tien. Most of these restaurants are within five minutes of Tha Tien pier, where the cross-river ferry runs to Wat Arun, so a simple plan is the temple in the late afternoon, the ferry back, and dinner from 18:00.
Restaurants near the Grand Palace itself are thinner on the ground. The visitor entrance is on Na Phra Lan Road, and the nearest cluster is Tha Maharaj, a riverside community mall with casual restaurants and its own car park, beside Tha Chang pier. TrueID’s round-up of places around Sanam Luang also lists Krua Khun Kung at 77 Maha Rat Road, a roti and mataba shop on Soi Phra Chan, and a red-pork rice shop in Soi Sukha 1. Walking south through Wat Pho to Tha Tien takes about fifteen minutes and puts the whole Tha Tien group within reach.
Maha Chai Road: Jay Fai, Thipsamai and the pad thai queue
Jay Fai and Thipsamai share one stretch of Maha Chai Road, and their queues work differently. Jay Fai opens Wednesday to Saturday only, 09:00 to 19:30 on Michelin’s page, and Michelin describes the queue as long but well organised. At Thipsamai, Time Out describes lines forming before opening, with the cooks working separate wok stations in full view of the queue. Thipsamai closes on Tuesdays, and it also has branches at ICONSIAM and Siam Paragon, where menus and prices differ by branch.
Know the price story at Jay Fai before you sit down. In August 2025 the Department of Internal Trade fined the restaurant 2,000 baht after a YouTuber was charged 4,000 baht for a crab omelette listed at 1,500; the restaurant said the dearer plate was a premium version for regulars and was ordered to display both prices, as Khaosod English and InfoQuest reported. Ask which one you are ordering. Thipsamai’s own website warns that the price of its fresh orange juice changes with the season, so ask there too.
Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu on Dinso Road holds a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 guide and is open daily 10:00 to midnight per Michelin. The best pad thai in Bangkok guide puts Thipsamai and Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu side by side, and Jay Fai also leads the street food in Bangkok list.
Sao Chingcha and Dinso Road: old shophouses near the Giant Swing
Around the Giant Swing, many restaurants are older than their customers. TrueID counted eight shops past their fiftieth year in the streets around Sao Chingcha, among them Mit Ko Yuan at 186 Dinso Road, trading for more than seventy years, and Mont Nom Sod, also on Dinso and past fifty, where toast with pandan custard starts at 15 baht. Krua Apsorn on Dinso is where Bangkok families take out-of-town guests to show them everyday Thai cooking done well: crab omelette, crab stir-fried with yellow chilli, a fast room and cash at the till. The Bib Gourmand belongs to its Sam Sen branch, not this one, and sources disagree on its weekly closing day, so phone first.
Sae Phun is the breakfast stop. The family traces the dish to a founder who sold it around Phlapphla Chai and Yaowarat, and the shop now sits on Tanao Road near the Tiger God Shrine after moving from Mahannop Road, so older guides still give the old address. You order by QR code, and the kitchen stops at 14:30. Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu completes the zone for the evening. Lan Khon Mueang, the plaza in front of City Hall, is the easiest landmark if you are meeting someone in the area.
Khao San and Banglamphu: where to eat a street away from Khao San Road
Most people looking for Khao San restaurants end up on the road itself, and Khao San Road restaurants are mostly bars, hostel cafes and stalls cooking for a late crowd. The Banglamphu restaurants worth crossing town for are in the streets around it. Ten Suns on Wisut Kasat Road is about ten minutes on foot from Khao San, according to Phuket 101, and gives you a Bib Gourmand lunch for under 200 baht; it is small, fan-cooled and shut by 16:00. Kinlom Chomsaphan, at the end of Soi Samsen 3 on the river, is the evening option for a group, with the Rama VIII Bridge over the terrace, an air-conditioned room indoors and Wongnai listing 81 to 150 seats.
LAUN opened on Soi Samsen 4 in 2022, serving one-plate rice and pasta from morning into the afternoon. Google now places it on Fueang Nakhon Road near Wat Ratchabophit, the street its sister restaurant Baan Nual moved to in 2023, with later hours. Until the shop confirms the move, check Instagram (@launsamsen4) before you walk over. Phra Sumen Road, between Khao San and the river, has two shops TrueID counts past seventy years, Pua Kee for yen ta fo noodles and Posh Sapakhan for cooked-to-order plates. For a drink after dinner, the rooftop bars in Bangkok list covers the city.
Michelin restaurants in the Old Town, with edition years
These are the awards as guide.michelin.com shows them, with the edition each comes from:
- Jay Fai: one star since the first Bangkok guide in 2018, and on the Thailand 2026 star list.
- Nusara: one star, marked new in the 2026 guide.
- Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu: Bib Gourmand since the 2022 guide, still on the 2026 Bib Gourmand list.
- Ten Suns: Bib Gourmand in the 2026 guide, on the current Bangkok Bib Gourmand list.
- Rongros: listed since at least the 2022 guide; its restaurant page is live.
- Sang Tha Tien: added in 2023; its restaurant page is live.
- Krua Apsorn: the 2026 Bib Gourmand is the Sam Sen branch in Dusit, not Dinso Road.
Two names need care. Sae Phun appears as a Bib Gourmand on Michelin’s Rattanakosin map for the 2022 guide, but its own restaurant page no longer loads and it is not on the 2026 Bib Gourmand list, so it is not a current Bib. Michelin here is not always expensive: Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu and Ten Suns both sit in the guide’s cheapest price band. For every star and Bib across the city, see Michelin star restaurants in Bangkok.
Getting around: MRT Sanam Chai and Sam Yot, river boats, parking
The MRT Blue Line under the river made the old town easy to reach by train. Sanam Chai exit 1 comes up at Museum Siam: head toward the river for Tha Tien, Wat Pho and the Maha Rat Road restaurants, about six minutes on foot, or the other way for Pak Khlong Talat. Sam Yot is the station for Maha Chai, Dinso and Tanao roads, ten to twelve minutes on foot to Jay Fai, Thipsamai, Krua Apsorn and Sae Phun. Banglamphu and Samsen are the gap in the network; Ten Suns is 1.7 km from Sam Yot, so a Grab is quicker, and Kinlom Chomsaphan is easiest by car or taxi.
The Chao Phraya Express Boat is the slower, better-looking route from Sathorn pier under BTS Saphan Taksin, with stops at Tha Tien, Tha Chang and Phra Athit, and it skips the road traffic into the old town altogether. Buses 2, 15, 47 and 59 run along Ratchadamnoen. Drivers can use the Tha Maharaj car park and walk; Kinlom Chomsaphan is the only restaurant in this list with its own car park. Further downstream, Charoen Krung’s riverside restaurants pick up past Pak Khlong Talat, and Chao Phraya river restaurants covers both banks. Chinatown restaurants start one MRT stop east of Sam Yot at Wat Mangkon, and the Thonburi bank opposite has its own guide, Pinklao restaurants across the river.
Quick answers
FAQ
Where to eat near the Grand Palace?
The best-reviewed tables are about fifteen minutes' walk south, through Wat Pho to Tha Tien: Rongros and Supanniga Eating Room for a Wat Arun view, or Tonkin-Annam for a Vietnamese lunch at about 251 to 500 baht a head. Closer to the palace, Tha Maharaj is a riverside mall of casual restaurants with parking, and TrueID's Sanam Luang list adds a red-pork rice shop in Soi Sukha 1 that opens at 06:00.
Which restaurants have a Wat Arun view, and what do they cost?
Rongros, on Maha Rat Road opposite the temple, sits in Michelin's second price band and has a terrace and rooftop; BK Magazine priced its beef green curry at 380 baht in 2020. Supanniga Eating Room at Riva Arun faces Wat Arun from river level, with mains around 250 to 350 baht in a 2023 review of the Supanniga group. Mitr Street and Nusara look over Wat Pho instead, and Nusara's tasting menu starts at US$185.
Where should I eat near Khao San Road?
The better restaurants near Khao San Road are a few streets out. Ten Suns on Wisut Kasat Road, about ten minutes on foot from Khao San, serves Bib Gourmand braised beef noodles from 120 baht until 16:00, closed Monday. Kinlom Chomsaphan at the end of Soi Samsen 3 is the dinner option, a riverside seafood garden facing the Rama VIII Bridge. Krua Apsorn and Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu are on Dinso Road, a walk south past Democracy Monument.
Is Jay Fai cash only, and how long is the wait?
Yes, it is cash only. Michelin's page lists Jay Fai as open Wednesday to Saturday, 09:00 to 19:30. Michelin describes the queue as long but well organised. The crab omelette is listed at 1,500 baht; after the Department of Internal Trade fined it in August 2025 over a 4,000-baht premium version, the shop must display both prices, so confirm which one you are ordering.
Which Old Town Bangkok restaurants are in the Michelin Guide?
In the 2026 guide, Jay Fai and Nusara hold one star each, Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu on Dinso Road and Ten Suns on Wisut Kasat Road hold Bib Gourmands. Rongros has been listed since at least the 2022 guide and Sang Tha Tien since 2023. Krua Apsorn's 2026 Bib belongs to its Sam Sen branch, not Dinso. Sae Phun's 2022 Bib no longer shows on current Michelin pages.
Which MRT station do I use for Old Town Bangkok restaurants?
Two Blue Line stations. Sanam Chai exit 1, at Museum Siam, is about six minutes on foot from Tha Tien, Wat Pho and the Wat Arun-view restaurants on Maha Rat Road. Sam Yot serves Maha Chai, Dinso and Tanao roads, roughly ten to twelve minutes on foot to Jay Fai, Thipsamai, Krua Apsorn and Sae Phun. Banglamphu has no station, so take the Chao Phraya Express to Phra Athit pier or a taxi; Ten Suns is 1.7 km from Sam Yot.
Where can I eat late at night in the Old Town?
Thipsamai on Maha Chai Road stays open until midnight except on Tuesdays, and Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu on Dinso Road is listed until midnight every day. Kinlom Chomsaphan closes at midnight on Google's hours and 23:00 on Wongnai's, so phone before a late visit. Mitr Street's kitchen closes at 22:00, with its rooftop bar upstairs. After midnight, ride one MRT stop from Sam Yot to Wat Mangkon for the late kitchens of Yaowarat.
