About

Sae Phun has been cooking khao na kai, chicken stewed in a thick brown gravy and spooned over rice or egg noodles, for the better part of a century. The Standard traces the family back to a founder from China who carried the dish around Phlapphla Chai and Yaowarat before opening a shop called Lok Nga Tin; a later generation spent some years in Hua Hin, then brought it back to the old town under the family name.

Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand in 2019 and 2020, and Michelin's map of historic Rattanakosin marks it as a Bib in the 2022 Thailand guide. When checked in October 2026, its restaurant page on guide.michelin.com no longer loaded and it was not on Michelin's current Bangkok Bib Gourmand list, so treat the Bib as a past distinction. Michelin's Chinatown and Phra Nakhon round-up describes the full plate: chicken over rice or noodles with a crispy fried egg, slices of kun chiang sausage and green chillies. On Wongnai's current menu the plain plate is 109 baht, 129 with a fried egg and 159 with sausage and egg; sticky rice with red pork is 129 and fried pork dumplings 100. The family says it cooks without MSG, and you order by QR code.

Older write-ups, including Michelin's 2020 article, give 112 Mahannop Road. Wongnai reviews from early 2026 describe a move to a bigger, renovated shop at Praeng Sappasart, and Wongnai and Google now list 490 Tanao Road, six doors past the Tiger God Shrine. Hours are 08:00 to 14:30, closed Wednesday. MRT Sam Yot is about ten minutes on foot, which beats hunting for a parking space on the narrow street.
