Mookata Bangkok: 9 Thai Grill-and-Hotpot Places, from Set Tables to Buffets
Mookata Bangkok: 9 places to grill pork on the dome, sets from about 140 baht a head, untimed buffets from about 276, river tables, how to order.
Mookata, also written moo kata or moo krata, is Thai barbecue and hotpot on one pan. Pork sizzles on a raised dome over charcoal or gas, and the fat runs down into a moat of broth where vegetables, glass noodles and an egg cook into soup. You grill it yourself, dip each piece in nam jim and keep going until the broth runs dry. For mookata, Bangkok gives you two kinds of shop: set-price tables where you order a tray for the group, and buffets where you pay per head and help yourself. Seven of the mookata restaurants in Bangkok below open around 16:00, so plan it as an evening meal.
The nine picks below have prices and menus traced to Wongnai, Ryoii, Lemon8 and Airportels, and are ranked by Google rating and review volume, how clear the prices are, and editorial judgement. Budget in two bands. Set shops come to about 140 to 300 baht a head when the table is full, with Nak-La’s 279-baht SET M, shared by two, at the bottom; Tui, with its prawns, runs higher. Buffets cost 229 to 399 baht a head before drink refills or an extra grill. Only two picks are easy by train: Nak-La inside MBK Center off BTS National Stadium, and Taweechok on Banthat Thong, about ten minutes’ walk from the same station. Five are on the Thonburi side of the river, four of them around Pinklao, where people drive or take a Grab and most shops have their own parking.

What mookata is and how to order it
Every mookata table gets the same setup: a dome-shaped pan over charcoal or gas, with broth poured into the moat around it. Raw meat goes on the dome. The broth catches whatever drips off it, and anything you would rather boil, such as vegetables, glass noodles or a cracked egg, goes into the moat. The soup takes on more of the pork with every round, which is why many tables finish with noodles.
The first decision is how you pay. At a set shop you order a tray sized for the table and add plates as you go. Taweechok’s sets run 330 to 550 baht; Yak Khu’s run 359 to 649; Nak-La’s start at 279 for one or two, with the vegetable bar and sauce bar refilled free. Khun Phat in Ramkhamhaeng is a third model: you pick meat and seafood at a counter and pay by the 100 grams, starting with a half-kilo pork set from 229 baht. At a buffet you pay per head and take what you like from an iced counter. The buffets here charge 229 to 399 baht, and reviewers report no time limit at Rim Nam, Bar B Q Resort, Tidmun and on Thailaos’s 399 tier.
Sets usually cost less for two people, and buffets usually win for groups who want prawns. Ask whether the price includes drinks. Bar B Q Resort and Tidmun include soft drinks; Rim Nam charges 39 baht for refills. Thailaos staff will grill for you, and Yak Khu’s 359-baht set comes grilled by staff, which helps a table where nobody has used the pan before.
Best mookata in Bangkok by area: Banthat Thong, Sathorn, Pinklao, Ratchaphruek
Banthat Thong. Taweechok’s head office sits on the corner of the Banthat Thong intersection on Rama VI Road, opposite Stadium One. What sets it apart is the second kitchen: som tum, yam and fried food under their own name, with yam mama instant-noodle salad at 99 baht, seared Isan-style beef at 159 and fried rice with pork crackling at 39. Reviewers mention live music on Friday and Saturday nights. There is no parking, so take the BTS. On Banthat Thong Road at Chula Soi 12, Chu Grill Shabu gives each table a split pan, broth on one side and a grill on the other. It is not a mookata dome, but it settles the argument for a table split between hot pot and barbecue. More of the street is in Siam restaurants and Samyan Mitrtown restaurants.
Sathorn and Chan Road. Thailaos Bar Grill is the reason to come here for mookata. Prices move with promotions: an earlier Lemon8 post mentioned 199 baht plus a 79-baht grill fee per table, and the November 2024 posts list 229, 299 and 399. Ask which tier is running before you sit down. One Lemon8 user found the nine sauces on the sweet side. BTS Surasak is about 1.5 km away, so take a taxi or Grab; the rest of the district is in Sathorn restaurants.
Pinklao and Arun Amarin. If you want several mookata options close together, cross the river. Yak Khu, Rim Nam, Bar B Q Resort and Tidmun are all on the Thonburi side, within a short drive of each other. Yak Khu seats 81 to 150 and delivers from noon, and a November 2025 reviewer had a 400-baht combo of pork, beef and chicken. Wongnai’s menu lists egg tofu at 29 and water at 15. One 2023 reviewer did find the charcoal weak even after a top-up. For everything else on that side, see Pinklao restaurants and Central Pinklao restaurants.
Ratchaphruek. Tui Mookata is a Thonburi chain with branches in Talat Phlu, Pho Nimit and Charoen Nakhon, and the Ratchaphruek one is the branch with the prawn pond. A fresh pan with new charcoal costs 30 baht, and garlic rice and fries come on the side. Wongnai and Grab disagree on hours and on the address, so phone 062 351 1353 before a lunchtime trip. The road’s other restaurants are in Ratchaphruek restaurants.
Mookata buffet in Bangkok: no clock running
What separates a mookata buffet in Bangkok from the mall buffets is the clock: reviewers report no time limit at all four here (at Thailaos, on the 399 tier). Bar B Q Resort makes the strongest case for seafood. Its cooked line adds glass noodles baked with prawns, som tam, fried chicken, fruit and ice cream, and children under 100 cm eat free, which makes it the family pick. An extra grill is 99 baht. Its Wongnai score is cooler than Google’s, 3.7 from 65 reviews, and the complaints are about consistency: one reviewer found the soft drinks gone by about 22:00, and others say the crab for grilling is the weak spot.
Tidmun is the beef choice: shoulder, blade and tongue on the hot plate, plus fresh prawns, squid and bacon. Its Banthat Thong branch charges 199 to 219 baht plus 39 for drink refills, according to a Wongnai review. A 2023 reviewer found the Pinklao room full, so arrive early. Thailaos is the buffet with a theme and a 90s soundtrack, and it takes bookings for weekend evenings on 092 996 6294. Other buffets, from Korean barbecue to hotel lines, are in buffets in Bangkok.
Air-conditioned mookata in a mall
Nak-La at MBK is the answer for anyone who wants mookata without the heat of a street table or a car. Airportels says this was the chain’s first branch, opened in 2022. The extras are cheap: smoked bacon at 59 baht a plate and an egg at 10. A January 2026 Wongnai review mentions a 299-baht-per-head buffet, while other reviews say sets only, so ask at the counter. The queue is the cost of the location. There are no bookings, you put your name down at the front, and Wongnai reviewers mention long queues. Taweechok on Banthat Thong is the other air-conditioned choice nearby, a street shop with a second floor rather than a mall unit, and the one to pick if the MBK line is out the door.
Mookata by the Chao Phraya
Rim Nam Barbeque is the only pick with tables directly on the river. The seafood grill coupon gets each table one basket from the seafood counter, according to a July 2024 reviewer, and the line carries pork belly, bacon, big prawns, oysters and scallops to grill with cheese, plus curry-fried crab, blue crab salad and crispy fluffy catfish. A 2023 reviewer noted a big fan pulling air through the room. The river-edge tables are the reason to come, and one Wongnai reviewer arriving at 17:30 on a February evening found them gone, so call 089-457-1234 or 085-364-8881 first. Tidmun on Sirindhorn Road also has a waterside section, according to a December 2024 reviewer. For river views without a grill, see restaurants on the Chao Phraya.
Mookata near me: by BTS, MRT and late hours
For mookata near me in central Bangkok, start at BTS National Stadium: Nak-La is along the walkway in MBK, and Taweechok is about ten minutes away on foot or by motorbike taxi. On the MRT Blue Line, Bang Yi Khan station puts Yak Khu just under 1 km away and Bar B Q Resort about 1 km away; Rim Nam is 1.7 km from the same station. Tidmun is more than 2 km from the nearest MRT stations, Bang Yi Khan and Sirindhorn, and Thailaos, Khun Phat and Tui are taxi or car trips. For other restaurants close to you, district by district, see restaurants near me.
For late meals, Nak-La lists 02:00 and Taweechok 01:00 on Google (other listings range from 23:30 to 02:00). Thailaos runs to 01:00 on Friday and Saturday, and Bar B Q Resort’s closing time is given as anything from midnight to 02:00. Khun Phat is the one to watch: Google shows midnight, but Wongnai says dine-in ends at 21:00, so arrive before 20:00. For grilled meat at a street stall instead of a pan, see street food in Bangkok; for a broth-only meal, hot pot in Bangkok.
Practical tips
Book where you can: Thailaos takes phone bookings for weekend evenings and Rim Nam for its river-edge tables, while Nak-La takes none. Parking is on site at Rim Nam, Bar B Q Resort, Tidmun and Tui (where reviewers say you may park further out on busy evenings), on the street at Yak Khu and in the soi at Thailaos, and does not exist at Taweechok, according to Wongnai. Wear something you don’t mind smelling of the grill. Solo diners pay a little more at Rim Nam, 319 baht instead of 299, while Nak-La’s SET M is sized for one or two. Quick answers
FAQ
What is mookata?
Mookata (หมูกระทะ, also spelt moo kata or moo krata) is a Thai tabletop meal cooked on a domed pan over charcoal or gas. Meat goes on the raised dome; the moat around it holds broth, which catches the dripping fat and cooks vegetables and noodles. Moo means pork and kata means pan, and marinated pork with pork belly is the base, with beef and seafood as extras. You cook it yourself and dip it in nam jim.
How much does mookata cost in Bangkok?
Sets are the cheaper route for a full table. Nak-La's pork SET M is 279 baht for one or two, and its 499-baht SET XL is sized for four or five. Yak Khu's sets run 359 to 649 baht. Buffets in this guide charge 229 to 399 baht a head: Thailaos from 229, Rim Nam 299, Tidmun about 276 net and Bar B Q Resort 320 net. Drinks and extra grills are often charged separately.
Is mookata a buffet or do you order sets?
Both exist, and the shop decides. Taweechok, Nak-La, Yak Khu and Tui Mookata sell sets sized for one to five people. Khun Phat weighs meat by the 100 grams. Thailaos, Rim Nam, Bar B Q Resort and Tidmun are buffets at a fixed price per head, and reviewers report no time limit at all four (at Thailaos, on the 399 tier). Couples usually spend less on a set; groups after seafood do better at a buffet.
Where is the best mookata in Bangkok?
By Google rating and review volume, the strongest are Taweechok on Banthat Thong and Thailaos Bar Grill on Chan Road, both 4.9 from more than 3,000 reviews, then Yak Khu on Arun Amarin Road. For a river view, Rim Nam under Phra Pinklao Bridge. Pinklao has the most choice in one area: four of the nine picks are there, within a short drive of each other, and Tui in Ratchaphruek is further west on the same side of the river.
Which mookata places stay open late?
Nak-La at MBK lists 11:00 to 02:00, so it keeps serving after the mall has closed. Taweechok on Banthat Thong closes at 01:00 according to Google, though Wongnai says 23:30 and Ryoii 02:00, and Thailaos runs to 01:00 on Friday and Saturday and to midnight on other nights. Bar B Q Resort's closing time differs by source: midnight on Google, 01:00 on Wongnai, 02:00 in one December 2024 review. Tidmun, Yak Khu and Khun Phat list midnight, though Khun Phat's Wongnai page says dine-in stops at 21:00. No place in this guide is confirmed as open 24 hours.
What is the difference between mookata and Korean barbecue?
Mookata is Thai and cooks two ways at once: grilling on the dome while the broth in the moat turns into soup, so the meal ends with noodles and vegetables in pork-flavoured stock. Korean barbecue grills meat on a flat plate or grate, without the broth, and serves it with lettuce, sauces and small side dishes. Korean barbecue buffets in malls are listed in the buffets in Bangkok guide; this page covers the Thai pan only.
Can I get mookata near a BTS or MRT station?
Two picks work by train. Nak-La is inside MBK Center, linked by walkway to BTS National Stadium, and Taweechok on Banthat Thong is about ten minutes from the same station on foot or by motorbike taxi. On the Thonburi side, Yak Khu is just under 1 km from MRT Bang Yi Khan and Bar B Q Resort about 1 km. The others are best reached by taxi, Grab or car, and most of them have parking.
