About
Tonkin-Annam is a two-storey shophouse at 69 Maha Rat Road, at the mouth of Soi Tha Tien by the Krungthai Bank, cooking northern and central Vietnamese food. The name uses the colonial-era terms for those regions, and the siblings who run it, Gai Lai Mitwichan and his sister, cook from the recipes of grandparents who came from Hanoi and Hue.
The dish on most tables is nem nuong, grilled pork wrapped at the table in rice paper with herbs and dipping sauce; The Standard calls it the standing order and also points to banh cuon and the Vietnamese coffee. Time Out recommends cha tom, prawn grilled on sugarcane, and banh beo, Hue's small steamed rice cakes, plus Hanoi egg coffee. Ideal Magazine singles out the bun bo Hue, a lemongrass-heavy beef noodle soup from the family recipe, and the crisp banh xeo pancake. Time Out's 2017 prices were 250 baht for nem nuong or cha tom, 160 for banh beo and 80 for egg coffee; KTC's guide, updated in January 2026, estimates 251 to 500 baht a head.
Hours are not settled. Google and The Nation (February 2025) list 11:00 to 21:00 daily, while KTC gives Wednesday to Monday, 11:00 to 15:30 and 17:30 to 21:00, closed Tuesday. Ideal Magazine (January 2026) says it is cash only and takes bookings by phone, which helps given the few seats. MRT Sanam Chai is about six minutes away.
