About

Tang Jai Yoo is a Teochew restaurant of more than 80 years at 85-89 Yaowaphanit Road, in the lane opposite the Hua Seng Heng gold shop. It is one of three old Teochew houses at the Phat Sai and Yaowaphanit corner, with Sin Kwang Meng and Jim Jim, and a Hungry Onion regular notes that before Anthony Bourdain filmed here the customers were almost all Thai-Teochew. Roast suckling pigs hang at the front, live fish sit in tanks and you pick your own live crab. Wongnai's signature list is Chinese-style raw fish, an original recipe of more than 90 years that Wongnai wrote up separately, oyster omelette, mantis prawns fried with chilli and salt, and hae kuen crab rolls. Foreign press adds the whole suckling pig Bourdain praised, blue crab steamed with salted black olives and minced pork, and a crab fried rice one reviewer called superb for the amount of lump crab. Wongnai puts the spend at 501 to 1,000 baht a head, more with the big plates. The decor is unchanged and the lighting harsh; nobody comes for atmosphere. Google lists daily 10:30 to 22:00; other sources show an afternoon break from 14:00 to 17:00. Book ahead, allow time for the large dishes, and note reviewers report cash and transfer rather than cards. Parking is scarce; reviewers suggest I'm Chinatown. Google scores it 4.3 from 2,300 reviews. MRT Wat Mangkon is 200 metres away.
