About
Mangkud Cafe (mangkud is Thai for mangosteen) serves old-style Thai family recipes in a blue house at the mouth of Ratchaphruek Soi 34 in Chimphli, beside a church; Wongnai's directions put it in the same soi as Jeed Jaad restaurant. Upstairs is an art gallery you can walk through, and herbs and vegetables come from the restaurant's own garden, a detail Time Out noted as far back as 2016.
Wongnai members' favourites include a set of rice tossed with fried mackerel, grandma's style, at 250 baht, choo chee curry with fried mackerel at 275, green curry with longan, red curry with roast duck, ma hor (fruit topped with sweet minced pork), fried duck in tamarind sauce and pla haeng taeng mo, watermelon with sweet dried fish. A Wongnai article picks out phom rak nai suan, a thin crepe wrapped around flowers from the garden, at 100 baht. The delivery menu adds a Lanna-style pad thai made with crispy khao soi noodles at 250 baht.
How you eat in the dining room has changed more than once. A June 2022 Wongnai review says the restaurant had stopped selling single dishes and offered only a full course at about 700 baht plus tax and service; a 2023 review says the a la carte menu had become a Thai Chef's Table set at 750, 850 or 950 baht, booked by phone or LINE with a deposit at least a day ahead. The delivery menu still sells single dishes. Wongnai's listing tier is 251 to 500 baht a head, but recent reviewers report 501 to 1,000. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 19:00. Pets are welcome, cards are accepted, there is parking and no Wi-Fi.
