About
Tonoak is a family-run Thai rice-and-curry shop that has been feeding Siam Square for more than fifty years on recipes passed down from the owner's grandfather. It started as a near-secret room on the second floor of the old Lido cinema and moved to the second floor of a shophouse on Siam Square Soi 9, where the entrance is a narrow staircase beside another restaurant that is easy to walk past. The draw is a set of house rice dishes with odd names: khao maew, 'cat rice', is fried rice with mackerel and shallots, and khao maa, 'dog rice', is its sibling, both priced around 70 to 90 baht per plate according to Thairath's 2026 Siam food guide. Time Out says the sticky rice stir-fried with grilled pork neck in jaew sauce is what nearly every table orders, and larger groups go for the old-style mixed sukiyaki pot. Most plates come in under 100 baht, which is why Chulalongkorn students and office workers have kept coming back for decades. It is a plain room with a handful of tables and no decoration to speak of. Google lists it open daily from 11:00 to 20:30; Time Out gives 10:30 to 20:30.
